More expensive guitars feature solid tonewood tops that are often made of spruce, sides and backs that are often rosewood, maple, or mahogany. Lower-priced guitars can combine solid tops with laminated backs and/or sides. Entry-level or beginner guitars are usually made entirely of laminated tonewood. Necks are generally made of mahogany, and fingerboards are usually made of dense tropical hardwoods such as rosewood or ebony. They are electrically-amplified fingered (or plucked) string instruments. The bass is similar in appearance to an electric guitar, but with a larger body, a longer neck and scale length, and, usually, four strings tuned an octave lower in pitch, thus resultin in the bass range. Since the 1950s, the electric bass has largely replaced the double bass in popular music. The bass is typically used to provide the low-pitched bassline(s) and bass runs in popular music such as jazz.
